Cruise ready
Balata is no dock queen. When we purchased the boat in 2024, she had recently sailed across the Atlantic and was equipped with essential cruising gear for blue ocean cruising such a safety raft and medical kits. Plus, all the standing and running rigging had been recently replaced.
Since becoming owners, we have made updates and additions in terms of confort and safety to make her perfectly suited to our family voyage through the Caribbean.
What we love about the boat
We considered a lot of boats. Here’s why we fell in love with this one.
-
We initially were looking for a robust and safe mono-haul, but knowing we will be crossing the caribbean during one year, we quickly realized that the experience on a cat would be totally different: its confort would be no-match to what any mono-haul could offer, while maintaining very high level of safety and good sailing capabilities.
And as we confirmed with the many families and couples we have met…. “when you go Cat, you can’t come back! :o) “
Last, catamarans are much more in demand than mono-haul in the caribbean and hence much easier to sell back.
So paying the additional premium for a catamaran started making a lot of sense to us.

When we started our journey, we knew we wanted separate cabins for each of our two kids as they were entering ages where they need and demand it :o). For a 38-foot boat, the Lagoon 380 offers incredible space. The two aft cabins have queen-size beds and large hanging lockers and shelves. And the front port cabin is also very spacious.
The vast majority of the 4 cabins layout catamarans have been chartered at some point, with all the extra damages and tear this brings along. By choosing a 3 cabins layout owner version, we had a much better guarantee to have a well cared and non chartered boat.
The owner’s cabin is on starboard and is equipped with a private bathroom and shower in the fore, as well as a sliding door which isolate the whole starboard side of the boat from the living room, providing some privacy.
The S2 version of the Lagoon 380, as compared to its predecessor S1, is equipped with large side windows which offer a lot of light and beautiful view over the sea.

The original owner of our boat sailed it across the Atlantic from Europe to the Caribbean. It came pre-equipped with much of the equipment we wanted for comfortable cruising, such as a water maker, safety gear, excellent electronics, recent sails and rigging. Since taking ownership, we have added even more equipment, such new rocna anchor, new solar panels, new engine batteries, starlink fans in every rooms, and more. Our hope is that Balata’s new owner will take this turn-key vessel cruising.

As we were selecting the models to buy, we already had in mind that we needed to sell our boat within one year when our journey will end, and we wanted this process to go fast.
The lagoon 380 is the best seller catamaran in its category, and the owner version is very much thought after (much more then the 4 cabins charter version) as most have been well taken care of and never chartered. They are about 20-30% higher priced than their charter version equivalent, and for a very good reason. But they lose much less value over time, and sell much faster, which is why we decided to go only for the mythic Lagoon 380 in its owner version.
